7/1/22 - Summer Update dry+winds, then Monsoons

Hello and a very happy Monsoon season from Owl Peak Farm,

We thought 2022 was going to be the worst season we’ve ever attempted to grow in-  watching the landscape dry up, deciding to allow many fields to ‘rest’, witnessing a serious wildfire alert, low water levels in the acequias - but now, a turn to gentle, consistent rains and rainbows. What a shock from one extreme to the other with a tremendous sigh of relief to see the landscape respond immediately.

Supporting food accessibility

As you know, we are a 501c3 non-profit serving the community with organic produce and freshly stoneground grains grown in La Madera, New Mexico. We offer the online store for local sales in the Santa Fe-Taos-Abiquiu area (no shipping) where we can deliver the order or you can arrange a pickup from the farm or Abiquiu’s Farmers’ Market on Tuesdays between 4-6pm, located by the post office.

Owl Peak Farm is also focusing on supplementing and supporting local food access efforts by growing for this purpose and donating goods.  Reunity Resources in Santa Fe and Owl Peak Farm is a match made in heaven where our missions are founded on similar visions of healthy soils, accessibility, and a devotion to healthy foods from our farms in service to community. You will now find Owl Peak Farm products in their store and we will be making donations towards their food distributions, in a partnership to support the tremendous effort towards a healthier ‘food community.’

“Reunity Resources is a 501c3 nonprofit that operates a regenerative two acre urban farm and soil+compost yard.

This closed-loop, localized food system promotes equitable food access, and provides agricultural & environmental education to increase access to and participation in sustainable land stewardship.  Our programs include immediate food access solutions like fresh produce donations, Double Up Food Bucks, and the 24/7 Santa Fe Community Fridge, as well as educational offerings ranging from field trips and Summer Farm Camp to professional trainings.  We are working toward a future where everyone in our community is part of resilient, nourishing food systems.”

A few fun things from around the farm:

The farm’s peacocks are free to roam possibly creating La Madera as the peacock capitol of New Mexico? The sounds from along the river of their ‘cat calls’ mixed with rooster and wild bird songs make the early mornings very exotic.

The greenhouse is producing citrus, lemongrass, figs, and soon, plenty of passionfruit. We will begin to sell Owl Peak Farm Tropics at the Abiquiu Farmers’ Market alongside Owl Peak Farm Grains.

Many thanks to Patrick McFarlin for the beautiful ag-art in helping create the labels.

Cleo Ulatowski deserves a tip-of -the hat for their marketing support, thank you.

How about freshly milled nixtamal blue corn pancakes on Sunday morning, July 3rd? Come to Reunity Resources, 9-11am.

Eat more pancakes, cook more pancakes, share the love.

All the best from the farm, enjoy the beautiful summer.
