4/21 Update - Springtime at Owl Peak Farm

Hello from Owl Peak Farm,

The farm’s seasonal preparations are in full gear.  For those who don’t know, Owl Peak Farm consists of 3 properties in La Madera: Dora’s, El Ojito, and the original Owl Peak Farm. The land is organized for what works best, but they are coordinated to compliment and support one another. The fields are prepped and planted with corn, wheat, onion, potato, our beloved garlic, and alfalfa. We have starts growing of perennial sorghum, tomato, pepper, and kohlrabi. The greenhouse has various new citrus trees joining the monstrous figs and mint. We will be producing more greens and veggies in the next month. Chickens, peacocks, and guinea hens are happy in the chicken palace doing their job well.

By the time we re-open for community dinners with a new plan and all protocols in place, you will see many improvements. The Coffee Stop run by the fabulous Linda Garcia on Highway 111, will have a new back porch with a bathroom (hurray) and a fence for additional privacy. At Dora’s, the production house is getting wired for electricity and equipment is being delivered including an industrial garlic peeler for the bigger crop this year.

Through the end of May, the farm is home to 16 students from St. John’s College who who were abruptly displaced or were unable to return home due to the coronavirus. They work hard maintaining their studies along with shopping and cooking for themselves, running the day-to-day of group living, and volunteering to assist with caretaking of the farm. They’ve set up classrooms and offices around the properties filled with white boards, desks, and books ready for their virtual classes.

We have a strong team, community, and good farm relationships, and if nature sees fit, we’ll gather once again in the glorious growth of summer. There will be harvest, food, and community at the foot of Owl Peak by the river.

In the meantime, enjoy the spring time and visit our website for updates and recipes
